Simply the Best Brush For Double Coated Dogs
Do you have a double coated pup? Here are some of the best brushes for double coated dogs.
A dog’s undercoat is exactly as it sounds, it’s a second coat beneath the outer coat that keeps your dog warm in winter and cool in summer. Breeds that are native to colder areas generally tend to have undercoats and these include the German Shepherd, Pomeranian, Chow, Husky, Malamute and Samoyed. Since Rocco is a shepherd, he needed the best brush for double coated dogs. As you can see these breeds range from big dogs to small dogs, short hair to long hair.
Double coated breeds have long and course outer coats that protects the undercoat that is usually fluffy and soft. While dogs shed their outer coat all year round, the undercoat is usually shed seasonally. Dog’s with short hair are lucky because they don’t need this kind of brush.
Breeds with an undercoat require a lot of dog grooming all year round, but need a full de-shed and blow out at each change of the season. You need to brush the undercoat all year round to prevent any matting and during shedding time to remove all of the loose fur. This can be done with a rake or a de-shedding tool.

Buyer’s Guide – Why Rocco needed the best brush for double coated dogs?
Does my dog need this type of brush?
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and so does their fur. In order to keep your furry friend healthy and looking good, you need to find the right brush for their coat type. otherwise you run the risk of heat stroke (for short-haired dogs) or damaging their coat (for long-haired dogs).
There are three primary types of dog coats: fur-type, single-coat, and double-coat. Fur-type dogs have fur that grows to a certain length and then falls out; they need regular brushing to help remove dead and loose undercoats. Single-coat dogs with hair that grows continuously, like poodles and Yorkshire terriers, also need regular brushing; a pin brush followed by a fine-toothed metal comb should do the trick. Double-coat dogs, like golden retrievers and labradors, have a thick undercoat that sheds seasonally; during shedding season, they will need to be brushed daily with a slicker brush to remove the loose hair.
Knowing what type of coat your dog has will help you choose the right brush – and keep your furry friend healthy and happy.
As the temperature rises, so does the risk of heat stroke in our furry friends. Dogs cool themselves by Panting and by sweating through their paw pads.
In heat stroke, a dog’s body temperature can rise to 106°F or higher in just a matter of minutes. Left untreated, heat stroke can cause brain damage and be fatal. Symptoms of heat stroke include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, fever, lack of energy or coordination, vomiting or diarrhea, nervousness or agitation, seizures, and collapse. If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, move them to a cool area immediately and call your veterinarian. You can also wet their fur with cool (not cold) water and fan them to help lower their body temperature until they can see a vet. With some quick thinking and treatment, heat stroke in dogs is often preventable.
Which brush should I use for my double-coated dog?
Pin brushes are designed with rounded tipped metal “pins” and help remove loose fur, dander, and other debris from the top coat. Despite the name and appearance, pin brushes aren’t made with actual pins and won’t hurt your dog. Bristle brushes are designed for the top layer of fur, but a bristle brush will struggle to remove much loose fur from the undercoat. Combination brushes have a bristle brush on one side and a pin brush on the other. This enables you to flip the brush over if you find any tough tangles while you’re brushing your dogs fur.
Though they may look intimidating, pin brushes are a popular choice among dog owners for good reason. They’re very effective at removing loose fur and debris from the top coat without hurting your dog. If you find any tough tangles while you’re brushing, you can simply flip the brush over and use the bristle brush side. Combination brushes are a great option if you don’t want to keep track of two separate brushes. Whichever type of brush you choose, regular brushing is an important part of keeping your dog’s fur healthy and looking its best.
Slicker brushes, undercoat rakes, and wide-tooth combs are all different tools that can be used to brush your dog’s fur. Slicker brushes are similar to pin brushes, but they are usually wider. They work best on thick fur and are great at removing tangles. Undercoat rakes are designed to reach past the top coat without damaging it. This helps remove tangles and loose hair from the undercoat without breaking the protective outer layer of fur. Wide-tooth combs detangle your dog’s fur. They’re often too short to reach the dense underlayer, though. Used alongside an undercoat rake, you can remove the tangles in the top coat before handling the denser layer beneath.
Just as humans need the right hairbrush, dogs require different types of brushes depending on their fur type. If you have a dog with thick fur, a slicker brush is your best bet. These brushes are wider than pin brushes and can more easily remove tangles from thick fur. For dogs with a denser undercoat, an undercoat rake is a necessity. These combs are designed to reach past the top coat without damaging it, making it easy to remove tangles and loose hair from the undercoat. Finally, for dogs with shorter fur, a wide-tooth comb can be used to detangle the fur. While these combs are not long enough to reach the undercoat, they can be used alongside an undercoat rake to remove tangles from the top coat before tackling the denser layer beneath. By using the right brush for your dog’s fur type, you can ensure that their coat is healthy and tangle-free.
Should I brush my dog before or after a bath?
Some dogs have short, smooth hair types that lie close to the body, while others have long, flowing hair types that may even require daily brushing to prevent tangles. Regardless of the type of hair your dog has, it is important to brush it regularly to remove loose hair, dirt, and debris and promote hair growth. Brushing also helps to distribute natural oils throughout the hair, which can keep the coat healthy and prevent mats from forming. If your dog’s hair is tangled or matted, it is best to brush it before giving them a bath. Once the hair gets wet, it will snarl even tighter, making it difficult to remove mats and tangles. Even if your dog’s hair is not tangled, it can be helpful to brush it thoroughly outside before the bath to remove loose hair, leaves, stickers, or burrs. Even if you brush your dog before a bath, follow up with a good brushing after the hair is dry to ensure the coat is untangled and to further remove shedding hair. By taking the time to brush your dog’s hair regularly, you can help keep them healthy and comfortable while also preventing buildup of dirt and debris. A dog with a long coat also will take a while to get dry so it is best to brush before their bath.
How can I make grooming easy for my dog?
Brushing your dog’s fur is an important part of taking care of your best friend. Not only does it help to keep their coat healthy and free of tangles, but it’s also a great opportunity to bond with your dog. However, brushing can also be stressful for dogs if they’re not used to it. Here are some tips to help make the experience more enjoyable for both you and your dog.
First, make sure the brush you choose is gentle on your dog’s skin. Test it against your forearm if you’re not sure. Give plenty of treats during brushing sessions, and stop if your dog is showing signs of stress. It’s better to break brushing up into mini-sessions rather than stress your dog out.
You should also brush your dog in an area that’s familiar and comfortable for them. A good place to start is on the floor or in their crate, with you sitting next to them. You can gradually move to other areas, like their back or legs, as they get used to the brushing.
Finally, don’t forget to praise your dog and give them plenty of love during and after brushing. A little play time or a walk on the leash might also be in order
How do I care for my dog brush?
A dog’s coat should be brushed regularly to remove dead hair, distribute oils evenly, and prevent matting. But it’s important to keep the brush clean, too. Otherwise, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. To clean a dog brush, simply remove the hair after each grooming session. Most brushes have a release button that makes this task quick and easy. If your brush doesn’t have a release button, slip a comb into the bristles near the base of the brush and lift all the hair out in one solid piece. Once the hair is removed, disinfect the bristles with rubbing alcohol or pet-safe cleaners. For an even easier cleanup, look for a self-cleaning dog brush. These brushes have special features that remove hair from the bristles with the push of a button.
A dog’s brush should be kept dry and free of hair in between grooming sessions. To remove hair from the brush, slip a comb into the bristles near the base of the brush and lift all the hair out in one solid piece. You can also remove hair from the brush by pressing the release button on the back of the brush and then gently pulling the hair out of the bristles. To clean the hair out of a self-cleaning brush, simply press the release button and remove the hair from the bristle chamber.
